NetBase thinks you can get rid of Jews with alcohol and salt
Look, it's a press release for a "a semantic search engine that aggregates medical content from millions of authoritative health sites" . The happy readers of TechCrunch decide to give it a whirl.
One of the most unfortunate examples is when you type in a search for “AIDS,” one of the listed causes of the disease is “Jew.” Really.
The ridiculousness continues. When you click on Jew, you can see proper “Treatments” for Jews, “Drugs And Medications” for Jews and “Complications” for Jews. Apparently, “alcohol” and “coarse salt” are treatments to get rid of Jews, as is Dr. Pepper! Who knew? Since this was posted, the elves at NetBase have been sanitizing inputs as fast as their little wheels can spin; many of the examples cited in the comment thread have now been shut down. Unfortunately, Netbase seem to have done their cleanup by hand. Just for fun I tried a few words that were clearly-non-medical but didn't refer to identifiable ethnic groups. | Disease | Medications | Treatments | | Mozilla | IMAP,Eudora | Internet Explorer, Browser Extension, Firefox, Netscape | | Vampirism | Blood enzyme | Vampire Band, Montesi Formula, Freudian analysis, Research Activity,Jungian analysis | | foolishness | | IQ Test, buried disclaimer, Character, Charlotte, Dustfinger |
As further proof that the program really isn't sanitizing its data, when you expand "Freudian analysis", under "Vampirism", you get "The essay "The Vampire Archetype in Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre" addresses a controversial approach to the two Bronte sister's novels. The essay uses Jungian analysis, Freudian analysis, and folklore, to explore the possibility of vampirism in "Wuthering Heights" by Emily Bronte and "Jane Eyre" by Charlotte Bronte. " I was also happy to learn that there's a plant that treats vampirism, Anno Dracula, of which I learn ""Anno Dracula" (1992) by Kim Newman takes place in a world where Count Dracula was not killed by van Helsing and has gone on to court and marry Queen Victoria, ushering in a new age of vampirism in the world." ... sourced from Wikipedia. Oh, researchers, as you value your life and your reason, stay away from Wikipedia!. Don't bother criticizing me for mocking the investors of HealthBase. When you begin promoting your product, you'd damned well make sure it (mostly) works. The common thread among all those results I post is not just the ridiculous causes, it's the ridiculous effects. If you're going to trawl the entire Web, more power to you, but you'd better have some very, very sophisticated ways to rate the quality and context of the data you're getting back. After the initial debacle, the intelligent way to stem the leaks would have been to put together a database of allowed search terms, rather than a database of the forbidden. People are pretty sneaky. Look, look, Jane! Try and type! Try and search! Remember to post the text here, because who knows how long before they take our cures away.

Yeah, sorry. The interaction between my HTML fail, Dreamwidth's attempts to *fix* my HTML, and the DW/LJ translation weren't pretty.

You'd think as a cure for Jew, they'd at least pick something that makes a little (non)sense. Like bacon.

Possibly because of kosher wine and kosher salt. Not that that makes a great deal more sense, but it might suggest a causal thread.

The cures for vampirism seem more correct than the other ones, which is either awesome or sad, I'm not sure which.

Treatments for monkeys include cocaine and morphine - or, if you'd rather not go down that road, you can be vaccinated against them.
For tuberculosis, treatments include 'blood' (maybe it's not the TB making you pale and interesting), 'DNA' and also 'bed'. Plants and foods effective against tuberculosis include raisins, unripe grapes, milk, 'flower' (nonspecific).
If you are afflicted by pants, you might try butter, domestic turkey, ice cream, or DEET.
edit: Also, Sarah Palin is classified as a pharmaceutical substance.
edit edit: Treatments for 'wanking': 'official Joss Whedon blog'.

This makes more bizarre sense than you might think, at least historically, since Jews were blamed for the plague in the Middle Ages. Why not just blame us for AIDS now?!
Those cures are weird. I would have expected "Christianity" or something.
As far as vampirism goes, are you saying it's not a disease? :)

Apparently it's Freudian analysis. Which is nice, because there are so few things left for which that *is* a sensible treatment.
Someone must have written the Freud-analyzes-Dracula story by now, don't you think? Poss. Freud was Dracula.

Treatments for depression include regression analysis, the gold standard, a flat platform, the Canadian Shield (a geologic feature), 3-tesla proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and indirect opthalmoscopy. Borges missed his vocation, I'm telling ya.
Drugs include alcohol. Got that one covered, kthxbai.

Treatments for fanfiction include: Character, Abbreviation, and Bernard Doove guy. Fanfic can be treated by argument.
Porn, of course, has no search results, but if you have Pron, and are looking for meds, you should try Birth-control pills, Hyperbaric oxygen, or Non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs.
Hentai Treatments: Gameplay, anime, hentai game (erm, is this a "hair of the dog" approach, or some kind of homeopathy?), character, OVA Pros & cons-Pro: give idea, mean abnormality Cons: detailed violence, meaning pervert, negative connotation Meds: Angel dust, lubricant lotion (Nice to know they got something right; definitely treat all your hentai with lubricant lotion.) Complications: encourage violent sexual behavior
Iggy Pop causes lust. But we knew that. Not sure we knew that nun's habits and having small breast causes lust, though. Fortunately, you can treat lust with greed or album. Or take some human insulin for it. It should get treatment, because one of the complications is "Corrupt formerly good people." The advantages of treatment can include: endorse anti-fur position, gain power, give permanent erection. The cons? Constant struggle. Mm, yes.
Squid can be caused by IP user cookie. And you can treat squid with a Magnetic Field, or Superconducting Quantum Interference Device.
Causes of Breastfeeding: Morphine overdose, Lack of available scientific evidence, Grandmother, Alcohol, Hospital routine, Maternal reaction. Complications of same: Diminish efficacy, Vaginal dryness, Infect child, Aggravate disease, Decrease attractiveness, Decrease health (I'm thinking, at this point, that La Leche League should have a word or two with their search engine)
Causes of Paganism: Bishop, Christianity, Association, Belief, Monk Drugs/Medications: Plato
They don't know what causes polyamory, but you can treat it with Religion, Culture, Accommodation, Blog entry, or Coalition Partners.
You can treat fandom with fanzines. Or take some freon. Or use the associated food & plants: John Denver's Calypso. Fandom is caused by comment people and spoilers.
There's only one recommend treatment for Ogi Ogas: Grand Slam. Fortunately, you can treat neuroscientists with collaboration, or take some estrogen. And you'll want to get that seen to, because the complications include: General failure, Have patronizing overtone, Personal attack, Promote dangerous institutional bias, Be Al-Qaeda

Also, got zines as a treatment for 'girl germs'( this was unfortunately common in my childhood, now rarely found); leaflet as a treatment for lice, estrogen as a steroid that treats pulmonary emboli; and a chi-square test as a diagnostic procedure for sacroiliac joint dysfunction.
I forgot to add: 'Condom' is a treatment for Catholic.

"jew" is no longer a cure for aids, but Enyart is; when I clicked on that link, I learned that: Bob Enyart also angered families of AIDS vicims when he read the men's obitiaries on his television show calling the deceased "sodomite"s.
I also learned that Abbott Laboratories - Abbott raises AIDS drug price more than 400% ...
